P&P Oscar 2006 Revisited (Part 3): 4 Oscar Nominations for Keira Knightley and her Pride & Prejudice film 9 years ago!
With Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year and tonight's Oscars with two of its cast nominated for an Academy Award for lead and supporting acting categories: Rosamund Pike (Best Actress for Gone Girl) and Keira Knightley (Best Supporting Actress for The Imitation Game), and Costume Designer: Oscar winner* Jacqueline Durran
(Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley and P&P co-star Matthew Macfadyen) is nominated for Mr. Turner...just thought I'd revisit, reminisced, and look back at the 78th Academy Awards (though, then, it was in March 5th, 2006), 9 years ago, my all-time favorite Pride & Prejudice film scored 4 Oscar Nominations (including a Best actress nod for Keira for her Elizabeth Bennet role).
Here are the 4 Oscar Nominations for Pride & Prejudice (2005) as announced back in January 31st, 2006 (with images and video clips from the Oscars ceremony) as well as red carpet photos and video interviews of KK and more below...
1. Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Keira Knightley
Watch clips of Keira's brief Nomination parts during the 78th Academy Awards (2006):
FYI: Keira (front and center) sat in between her older brother Caleb Knightley and veteran actor Jack Nicholson. Also, fellow P&P co-star Judi Dench was nominated along side Keira for Best Actress for Mrs. Henderson Presents (whom she co-starred with another fellow P&P co-star Kelly Reilly aka Caroline Bingley)
2. Best Achievement in Art Direction - Sarah Greenwood (art director), Katie Spencer (set decorator)
3. Best Achievement in Costume Design - Jacqueline Durran
4. Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score - Dario Marianelli
Pride & Prejudice Oscar Nominee Reactions:
Keira Knightley: "We spent a glorious summer making this film in lovely England, with lovely, lovely director Joe Wright. It was great news to wake up to after a long night shoot on a pirate ship -- four wonderful nominations! I'm so proud."
Dario Marianelli: "I was in the studio writing a cue for my next film, my mind a million miles away from 'Pride & Prejudice,' when Joe Wright called me with the news. I literally had to sit down, breathless. There's a misguided notion that one has to suffer to do good work, and that just didn't happen on this film. It's been a real blessing."
Sarah Greenwood: "I was with 'Pride's' director Joe Wright and producer Paul Webster having a rather dull budget meeting on our next movie at Working Title when the call came in. Needless to say, we all yelped with joy! I'm over the moon!"
Jacqueline Durran: "When Joe Wright and I first talked about the costumes for 'Pride & Prejudice,' we both agreed to alter the aesthetic of the usual period look, and opted for more provincial, earthy, lived-in and real costumes. I'm so thrilled that our approach has been embraced!" (Oscar Nominee Reactions courtesy Variety)
FYI: At the time of Keira's Oscar nomination back in 2006, at 20 years old, she was the third youngest Best Actress nominee, after Keisha Castle-Hughes (13 in 2003) and Isabelle Adjani (a younger 20 in 1975).
Unfortunately, Keira and our beloved P&P lost all 4 of their Oscar nominations! Still, it didn't stop the film from being a box office hit with a worldwide total gross of over $121+ million (via Box Office Mojo), fan favorite, and getting Keira Knightley more famous as does its director Joe Wright. Not too mention, Keira sizzled @ the Oscars with her dazzling burgundy silk-taffeta one-shoulder gown, designed esp. for her, which was sold in an online auction for STG4,301 ($A10,390) to fund relief work in East Africa, Britain's Oxfam charity. She may have lost @ the Oscars, but that night, she rocked the Oscar fashions and was one of the Best Dressed Oscar Nominees. Most people don't even remember the winners anyway, but what they wore that night was what mostly everyone remember the most, lol! Besides, even if she never receives another Oscar accolade in her entire career, she will forever be 'Academy Award nominated actress Keira Knightley' for her best recognized Elizabeth Bennet role in Pride & Prejudice film.
