His & Hers Valentine's Day Gift Guide: Inspired by Pride & Prejudice
Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are arguably Jane Austen's most beloved characters, moreover they are one of the most celebrated couples in literature. Their story of Pride and Prejudice (1813) is one of the earliest models of the classic love/hate relationship seen often in novels and specifically in romantic comedies.
The complications that are prevalent in their relationship are the same as those that aggravate and alienate scores of men and women during the initial stages of their acquaintance or after the initial fascination leads to new perceptions and biases not in favor of the other. The measures that Elizabeth and Darcy apply to conquer their mutual animosity are due to gaining a greater and truer knowledge of themselves. It is a means that we all can employ to enrich our lives and to also strengthen and elevate our romantic relationships to the highest heights. In the process they evolve from indifferent acquaintances or slighted enemies to ultimately develop respect, admiration and a profound love for one another. Perhaps, that’s why we hold them so dear.
