Weekend Box Office: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire debuts at #1 with $161M and sets November record!
With some new great additional supporting cast (Jena Malone and Sam Claflin to name two) and director (Francis Lawrence) joining (the already established returning cast) the successful box-office sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Donald Sutherland and Jena Malone, the odds are ever in this new and one of the most anticipated films of 2013's favor as it surpasses box-office's opening weekend predictions and expectations as well as impressed critics and audiences alike with mostly rave reviews following the first film (The Hunger Games)'s well-received reception and success. Catching Fire sets a new record for a November opening! Earning an estimated $161.1 million from 4,136 locations, the high-profile sequel easily topped the previous record of $142.8 million, set by The Twilight Saga: New Moon in 2009.
I saw this movie with a friend Thursday night at 8 PM showing (on standard 2D, though I was hoping to see it on IMAX...maybe next time. I definitely want to see this movie again!). It was showing beginning that Thursday at my local AMC24 theater at 5 PM (both standard 2D and IMAX), then 8 PM, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30 and so on until midnight. The theater was packed, but it was not bad at all because if you missed the first showing, there was a new screening every 30 minutes or so. The movie was great! My friend (and she hasn't even seen the first movie nor read the books, but she wanted to see it with me) and I both loved and enjoyed watching it. I must say both Jena Malone and Donald Sutherland were great, both of their performances and individual scenes they appeared in were either the highlight or memorable. You will definitely remember their characters and their memorable scenes/moments with Katniss Everdeen and company long after seeing this film! I'll post my own review of this film very soon!
Anyway, here's more info. about this film's weekend box-office success (via Box Office Mojo and Collider)!
