Carey Mulligan and Gemma Arterton join Jennifer Saunders in Mamma Mia! Comic Relief special
Carey Mulligan and Gemma Arterton are set to join Jennifer Saunders in the comedian’s Mamma Mia! spoof for Red Nose Day.
The actresses will appear in the sketch, which is inspired by last year’s hit sequel Here We Go Again, alongside Alan Carr, Miranda Hart, Philip Glenister and Sue Perkins.
Titled Mamma Mia Here We Go Yet Again!, the parody sees Mulligan
play Sophie, the role taken by Amanda Seyfried in the films, with
Arterton taking the part of young Donna, as played on screen by Lily
James.
“There’s so many brilliant comedians here today,” Mulligan said on set. “Jennifer is so good at making you feel relaxed and the rest of the cast have all been so sweet and encouraging.”
“It’s been a real honour to watch these comedy masters up close,” she added.
Also joining the cast are Tom Hollander, who appears as Andy Garcia’s Fernando, and Susan Calman, who plays Donna’s friend Rosie (as portrayed by Julie Walters). Calman described the spoof as “probably the silliest thing [she’s] ever done for charity,” promising that it included “dancing, Birmingham accents and eating cake.” Rose Johnson will play young Tanya, while Lucy Montgomery will appear as her older counterpart (played on screen by Christine Baranski) and Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas will play young Sam, Bill and Harry.
The BBC previously confirmed that Saunders will reprise the role of Donna, as played by Meryl Streep in the film series.
Red Nose Day 2019 will be hosted by Sir Lenny Henry and will air on BBC One on March 15.
