Keira Knightley-Starrer ‘Colette’ In First Big Sundance Deal: Bleecker Street & 30WEST Team For U.S. Rights

EXCLUSIVE: In the first major deal on the ground at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, Bleecker Street and 30WEST teamed on a mid-seven figure U.S. rights pact for Colette, the Wash Westmoreland-directed film that stars Keira Knightley, Dominic West, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Elinor Tomlinson, and Aiysha Hart. Word in Sundance was that the filmmakers started the bidding looking for $4 million, this after a rousing Eccles Theater premiere at 6:30 Saturday. Multiple bidders chased it and the price exceeded that floor.

Bleecker Street and 30WEST are planning a traditional theatrical. Sony Pictures Classics, Amazon and Fox Searchlight were all in the mix in the first all nighter auction. Colette was one of several films that played well this weekend, and several other deals are being worked out. It always gets easier after the first splashy sale.

Westmoreland wrote the script with his late partner, Richard Glatzer, with whom he teamed on Still Alice, and Quinceanera. they wrote the script with Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The drama revolves around a young country woman who marries a famous literary entrepreneur in turn-of-the-century Paris: At her husband’s request, Colette pens a series of bestselling novels published under his name. Specialty Box Office: Joe Wright's Darkest Hour film tops $41 Million!

Focus Features’ Darkest Hour is now the highest-grossing fall release Specialty at $41M. It will soon overtake The Big Sick, which was 2017’s box office champ among limited release titles.

Holdovers (Third+ Weekend at BO):

Darkest Hour (Focus Features) Week 9 [1,341 Theaters] Weekend $3,065,000, Average $2,286, Cume $41,128,000 [Deadline]

Also, Joe Wright's Darkest Hour film scored 6 Oscar Nominations this morning! Unfortunately, JW was snubbed (as usual) for the Best Director category. If he didn't get one for either P&P and Atonement, it's no surprise here that he didn't get one this movie.

Rupert Friend has found his next big role.

The former Homeland actor and Emmy nominee will co-star in the fantastical CBS All Access series Strange Angel.

The project stars Jack Reynor (Grassland) as Jack Parsons, “a brilliant and ambitious blue-collar worker of 1930s Los Angeles who started as a janitor at a chemical factory but had fantastical dreams that led him to birth the unknown discipline of American rocketry. Along the way, he fell into a mysterious world that included sex magick rituals at night, and he became a disciple of occultist Aleister Crowley. Parsons used Crowley’s teachings of self-actualization to support his unimaginable and unprecedented endeavor to the stars.”

Friend will play Ernest Donovan, the enigmatic neighbor of Parsons who becomes the young scientist’s tour guide into the illicit underbelly of 1930s Los Angeles. “A lost soul and drifter, Donovan pulls Parsons out of his humdrum existence and into a strange new religion that encourages its followers to pursue their deepest and darkest desires as a means of bending the world to their will.”
