Casting News: Colin Firth takes on royal role as king George, reunites with Jennifer Ehle, and is being directed by Rupert Friend

Looks like and better known to Jane Austen/P&P fans as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from the 1995 BBC miniseries, Pride and Prejudice are reuniting in a new film, The King's Speech, slated to be released in theaters on November 26th, later this year. Not too mention Colin Firth is working yet again with another P&P 05 actor...this time it's Rupert Friend (P&P 05's Mr. Wickham)...so it's more like Darcy and Wickham working together again in the same movie.

Interesting...it seems Colin Firth is always working with other Pride and Prejudice/Jane Austen alumni actors esp. P&P 05 actors (see Six Degrees of Colin Firth...scroll down to the bottom of the page for it!)... Awesome! He has previously co-starred with Rupert in The Last Legion (see Colin and Rupert Legion still above...also, with another Lizzy....Bride & Prejudice's own Lalita actress Aishwarya Rai-Bachachan), Keira Knightley (Love Actually), Carey Mulligan (And When Did You Last See Your Father?), Talulah Riley (St. Trianians I and II), Judi Dench (Shakespeare In Love and The Importance of Being Ernest), and soon another Darcy, Matthew Macfadyen (The Promise Land slated for 2011, according to IMDB. See previous post here: Matthew Macfadyen and Colin Firth to co-star in 'The Promise Land), and Rupert again in a new film "Steve" that Colin himself mention in the following article below that he is going to be directed by Rupert in what looks like a short film.

Here's part of that article via CTV News:
Colin Firth says he is taking a break from movies for awhile, even though he has received some "very, very good" scripts since his Oscar nomination for "A Single Man."

There is one exception to the self-imposed hiatus, says Firth.

"I am doing a four-day shoot for a film called "Steve," which is being directed by my friend Rupert Friend, a young actor, and it feels about right -- short, sweet."

Firth, in Toronto to accept an environmental award for a retail business he runs with his wife's family, recently completed "The King's Speech," in which he plays the Queen's father, George VI. The film focuses on the period when George took over the throne for his abdicating brother, Edward VIII, in 1936.

The film also stars Geoffrey Rush as speech coach Lionel Logue, Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth (better known later as the Queen Mother), Guy Pierce as Edward VIII and Michael Gambon as George V.

Directed by Tom Hooper, "The King's Speech" also reunites Firth with Jennifer Ehle, his co-star in the much-loved 1995 miniseries "Pride and Prejudice." She plays Logue's wife.

Movie News & Rumors: Keira Knightley and Matt Damon to star in Tender Is The Night?

Rumors are all over the web about a new period adaptation that Keira Knightley and Matt Damon are rumored to be in talks to star together in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night...

Here's more info about it from The New York Magazine...
Keira Knightley's face is going to be all over the popular fiction table at Barnes and Noble. The actress — who has already appeared in adaptations of Pride & Prejudice and Ian McEwan's Atonement, and will soon star in adaptations of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and Claire Messud's The Emperor's Children — is said to be the front-runner to play the female lead in a film based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night, a novel about a marriage disintegrating in the South of France. Matt Damon (fifteen years Knightley's senior, for those keeping track of age differences we're supposed to ignore at home) is the desired male lead.

As there's only a script and no director attached, it's unlikely both Knightley and Damon will make it into the final project — if the final project gets made at all. (The pair may end up on the next version of this list though!) But between this film and the Fitzgerald biopic The Beautiful and the Damned, which Knightley is attached to star in as Zelda Fitzgerald opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, the actress should get a chance to play a high-strung, mentally unstable woman in an unhealthy relationship with an alcoholic who either is, or is loosely based upon, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Also, speaking of Keira Knightley's upcoming movies, this one is not a rumor and is about another film that Keira's already attached to star and filmed in the summer...

Joe Wright currently filming teen assassin flick 'Hanna' in Europe

Pride & Prejudice (as well as Atonement and The Soloist) acclaimed director Joe Wright is currently filming and directing his next film, a teen assassin flick, Hanna in Berlin, Germany (and other locations in Europe). He re-teamed with his Atonement lead star 16 year-old Academy Award nominee (The Lovely Bones) in this film as the title role character. Ronan co-stars with Eric Bana (The Time Traveler's Wife) and Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett.

Updated 4/21/10:

See new photo and First look: Saoirse Ronan as killer 'Hanna'

Here's the synopsis of Hanna via IMDB...

Hanna (Ronan) is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her father (Bana), an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own (Ms. Blanchett). As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.
Focus Features (whose other films include Pride & Prejudice and Atonement) holds worldwide rights to this film, which is set for a 2011 release.

Here's part of the press release/article (from last month) more about Hanna (after the cut)...

Keira Knightley filmed a new short film for free?

From PopEater.com...

In her new film, Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knightley plays an Elizabethan courtier who is unsuccessfully reunited with her lover when the couple gets trapped inside an unwieldy maze. The 10-minute short, which co-stars its director, Stuart Pearson Wright, was filmed on a $23,000 budget and shot in just one day. But the real kicker: Knightley did it all for free.

In a new interview with the Independent, Knightley explains why she waived her normal fee to take part in this relatively obscure project.
Keira Knigthley in Maze (source: The Independent Film)
"I loved the idea of doing something that was purely creative, weird and wonderful and not a commercial venture," she said. "Ideas were e-mailed and then developed at Stuart's studio over cupcakes and tea and under the skeleton of his dog and a film piece was decided on: a collision of our worlds."
'Maze,' which was shot last year in true low-budget fashion (Knightley's dressing room was a bedroom, according to the article), will have an even quieter premiere next month at the Riflemaker gallery in London, where it will be screened alongside Wright's paintings.
"Part of the reason for me wanting to use an actress like Keira is her association with period dramas," Wright said. "Those associations are important, to lull the audience into a false sense of the familiar. The juxtaposition of a Hollywood actress in period costume with a very contemporary shooting style, being jostled about by a jumpy camera, is an incongruous and uncomfortable one."
The pair met in the dressing room of a mutual friend, Rosamund Pike, when she starred in Gaslight at the Old Vic in 2007. Knightley says: "Stuart was wearing plus-fours and I thought it an extraordinary thing that someone had the balls..."

Nevertheless, they went out for a meal, along with Knightley's partner, Rupert Friend, and Pike. Knightley found herself sitting next to Pearson Wright, whose work she admired. "I first came across Stuart's work in French's [theatre] bookshop, where I picked up a copy of his drawings of actors, which I loved," she says.

Soon afterwards they met again, at a party hosted by their friend Joe Wright, the director of Atonement, "at which we formed a band with kids' instruments; I the kazoo, he the plastic trombone" says Knightley. They discussed potential projects. Read full article here!
The film will mark Wright's directorial debut. Meanwhile, Knightley has a number of projects upcoming, including 'Last Night,' opposite Sam Worthington and Eva Mendes. She's also in talks to join Eric Bana and Richard Gere in Noah Baumach's adaptation of 'The Emperor's Children,' based on the novel by Claire Messud.

Mr. Darcy and Mr. Collins in Any Human Heart?

Another former P&P co-stars Matthew Macfadyen and Tom Hollander will co-star in an epic adaptation of William Boyd's best-selling novel Any Human Heart for Channel 4.

Here's part of the article that mentions MM and TH via The Independent Film...

The four-part adaptation covers a myriad of pivotal 20th century events seen through the eyes of one man.
Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen and Sam Claflin will all take the role of writer Logan Mountstuart, playing him at different stages of his life.

Other cast members include Green Wing star Julian Rhind-Tutt as revolutionary John Vivian, Tom Hollander as the Duke of Windsor and Samuel West as a friend of Logan.

Any Human Heart
will be broadcast on Channel 4 later this year.

FYI: Matthew Macfadyen and Tom Hollander has previously co-starred/appeared together in 3 other films: Maybe Baby (2000), Enigma (2001), and of course, our favorite Pride & Prejudice (2005). With Any Human Heart (in addition to those 3 films), this will be their 4th time working onscreen (TV and films) together. Thanks to Kathy SF (from Matthew Macfadyen Topix...love the MM site ;)) for this lil' MM/TH tidbit! :)

Movie News: Sony Classics Takes Nigel Cole’s “Made In Dagenham” starring Rosamund Pike

According to IndieWire, Sony Pictures Classics has announced that they have pre-emptively purchased US and multiple foreign rights to “Calendar Girls” director Nigel Cole’s “Made In Dagenham.”  Featuring an impressive cast  (see a production still of them to your left. Source: Number 9 Films) in Sally Hawkins, Rosamund Pike, Miranda Richardson and Bob Hoskins, the film - inspired by a true story - was written by William Ivory and produced by Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen through their Number 9 Films label.
The film is a dramatization inspired by the true story of the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, where female workers walked out in support of equal pay. The actions of these women - “the Erin Brockoviches of 1960s Essex” - had an impact not only around the UK but the world, leaving a lasting legacy that had a permanent impact on women’s role in society.

“With the subject of women’s rights front and center, ‘Made in Dagenham’ is one of those unknown true stories of triumph audiences love to embrace, brilliantly directed by Nigel Cole, perfectly acted by Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike, Geraldine James and Bob Hoskins,” Sony Classics said in a statement.  “We are honored and delighted to be working once again with our old friends Liz, Stephen, HanWay and BBC Films.”
Director Nigel Cole added in a statement: “It’s fantastic that Sony Classics will be taking the story of these wonderfully empowering women to US audiences; as they showed with ‘An Education’ they will be great partners for our film.”

HanWay Films represents Worldwide sales - it’s CEO Tim Haslam, and the film’s producers Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley negotiated the sale to Sony Pictures Classics. The film was originally developed with funding from the UK Film Council, and its production has been backed by BBC Films, BMS Finance, Lip Sync Productions and the UK Film Council.

Mr. Collins & Jane Bennet?

Say it ain't so! lol...No, they are not in another (upcoming and still in development 2011) Lost In Austen movie, but in a recent radio James Bond adaptation of Goldfinger, former Pride & Prejudice 2005 film co-stars Tom Hollander (Mr. Collions) and Rosamund Pike (Jane Bennet) were  the voices of Pussy Galore and Mr. Strap when the radio special premiered earlier this month (last April 3rd) on BBC Radio 4. See previous post here: A New Radio Production of Ian Fleming's Goldfinger features Rosamund Pike and Tom Hollander for cast info.

Here's a cast photo featuring P&P alumni Rosamund Pike and Tom Hollander standing next to each other with Sir Ian McKellen...from UK's The Guardian:

All star: Goldfinger's radio cast. Photograph: Jarvis and Ayres/BBC

Radio 4's Goldfinger (Saturday | Listen here) was a starry affair. Ian McKellen was the titular villain, Rosamund Pike was Pussy Galore, and Tom Hollander and Tim Pigott-Smith were also in the cast. As the production unfolded, you could hear why all the actors involved had said yes: it was hammy, over-the-top and enormous fun. Toby Stephens's Bond was rather more boyish than his suave screen incarnations – after understanding Goldfinger's larcenous plans, he gasped: "He wants us to work for him. On a crime!" – and closer to Ian Fleming's style. That brought slightly mixed consequences. After an aide met her end he noted: "She was like a broken doll … poor little bitch". Pike maximised Pussy Galore's presence with a superb Southern drawl ("miaoooooow!") and Martin Jarvis, playing Fleming with his usual brilliance, was the director too. All-round top class radio.

The Pillars of the Earth teaser trailer and promotional stills from Starz

A new teaser trailer and promotional photos have just been released for Matthew Macfadyen and Donald Sutherland's upcoming “The Pillars of the Earth” (Ken Follett’s international bestselling masterpiece), an epic 8-part miniseries premiering July 23 on Starz

Pillars is directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan and produced by a group that includes Ridley & Tony Scott’s SCOTT FREE production company. There are some cast photos (including MM and Donald S.) over at the facebook page as well or check them out below!

Here's the synopsis (via IMDB):
The Pillars of the Earth is set against a backdrop of war, religious strife and power struggles which tears lives and families apart. In that time, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against the backdrop, love-stories entwine: Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, the sadistic Lord William, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone work and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age. Follett masterfully weaves these stories through political turmoil of 12th century England, creating a relevant and viable world for today’s audience and for generations to come.

Fashion Chameleon: Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley is recently featured in a seattlepi.com's occasional series featuring stars and their ever-changing fashion styles.
Actress Keira Knightley, then 17, arrives at the premiere of the film that launched her to international stardom, "Bend It Like Beckham," on April 11, 2002 in London. As you'll see in this gallery, Knightley has grown from a fondness for skinny jeans to a rewarding embrace of Chanel and other major labels. Now 25, Knightley is known as one of the film world's most fashionable stars as well as an accomplished actress.

Check out Keira's ever-changing fashion styles below when she was promoting Pride & Prejudice in 2005 in premieres (ie. TIFF, London, NYC, and Germany) and attended the British Independent Film Awards, Golden Globes, Oscars, and Vanity Fair Oscar Party. They were my favorite Keira Knightley fashion style and look. In my opinion, she looked the best when she was promoting P&P movie. Loved the dresses she wore esp. the TIFF, Golden Globes, and Oscar dresses/gowns.

What's your favorite Keira Knightley fashion style/look?
