Carey Mulligan: 'An Education' leading Lady

EW's Dave Karger can't stop [Oscar] buzzing and raving about Carey Mulligan. Previously, he and Missy Schwartz rave about Carey in their Best Actress chat. Now, here's another one where he interviews Carey.

Read on and watch the video (follow the link!)...

Meet Carey Mulligan: 'An Education' leading Lady

A top candidate for breakout actress of the year is certainly Carey Mulligan, the 24-year-old Brit who’d only had supporting parts in two films (she was one of Keira Knightley’s little sisters in Pride & Prejudice) when she scored the plum lead role in An Education (in theaters next Friday, Oct. 9). As precocious London schoolgirl Jenny, Mulligan not only holds her own opposite castmates Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina, and Sally Hawkins, but she completely carries the film, which was written by novelist Nick Hornby and directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig. And as you’ll see when you click play on Part 1 of our OscarWatch interview, she’s going to charm the pants off the Academy and should have no problem scoring a Best Actress nomination.

Film Review: Surrogates

Just saw Rosamund Pike's new sci-fi thriller film Surrogates, which debuts at a disappointing #2 with $15 M at this past weekend's Box-Office.

Unfortunately, Surrogates has also gotten mixed reviews from critics (some good and some are bad...but you know, people who went to see it actually loved and enjoyed this movie like I did...so to each, his/her own, as you'll read my review here for this film, lol...) , Rosamund, on the other hand, got mostly rave reviews for her solid dual acting from the following:

  • Hollywood Today, Rosamund Pike deservedly won praise for her dual performance as a plastic beauty/age-withered harrigan.
  • The Score Card Review, she got the most favorable review and highest score than her co-stars: Rosamund Pike as Maggie: OK, now here’s a solid attempt at acting. Pike’s role bears a considerable amount of weight in this case. She puts up a fight (through said surrogate), and … look, I know it sounds confusing, but trust that Pike actually isn’t bad at making sense of it. Best reason to watch this film, though that’s not saying much. Score: 5
  • NJ.com: The lovely Rosamund Pike — whose check here, I hope, enabled her to do next month’s fine “An Education” — brings a few real moments to her role as Willis’ wife.
  • UK's Telegraph: In the role of Willis’s Stepford-esque robo-wife, someone has finally figured out how to cast Rosamund Pike - superficially perfect, but falling to bits. Surrogates is the opposite: better than it looks.
  • Backstage.com: As his FBI partner, Radha Mitchell is quite good. So is Rosamund Pike, as the wife who is conflicted when Willis leaves their preferred surrogate lifestyle to go "human" on her.

More (nice) Surrogates related reviews:

Anyway, here's my Surrogates Review ...

[Warning! ... heavy spoilers within... for those who haven't seen this movie and don't want to be spoiled...]

starring Bruce Willis, Rosamund Pike,
Radha Mitchell, Boris Kodjoe

Here's a brief synopsis for Surrogates:
Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates.

I must say this movie was pretty good. My kind of movie to watch actually (kinda like the other Bruce Willis film, The Fifth Element, Tom Cruise's Minority Report, and Will Smith's I, Robot to name a few action/sci-fi films I enjoyed watching). It's a plus too that I love action and science fiction genres (as well as many other genres in pretty much every movie I like or enjoyed watching...I guess that's the best part about being a movie lover, lol), but of course, it has to be done right. I thought this movie did just that and though I didn't read the graphic novel it was adapted from, I loved this movie anyway and with Bruce Willis leading the cast...you can't go wrong, at least, in my opinion, he mostly doesn't disappoint me anyway, lol. What can I say, I love Bruce Willis! He is one of my all-time favorite actors and I mostly love his movies. He's always good in them playing different characters and his acting's very good too (whether he's doing action or drama or even comedy...he's just that talented and versatile with his acting ability). He was very good in this movie as well. I always root for his character especially when he's playing the good guy, of course. In Surrogates, Bruce Willis plays agent Tom Greer, one of the FBI agents partnered with Radha Mitchell's character, agent Jennifer Peters. They used their flawless young-looking surrogates robots to go to work, do their job and investigate crimes together, but they are actually in isolation from from a steam chair in the comfort of their homes and looks older and a mess compare to there surrogates, lol. So, basically, Bruce and co-stars were playing dual roles: one, their real selves and the other, their surrogate robots in a futuristic world, but they are still identified as one and the same person even if they used a different surrogate or they appear in their real-selves.

Rosamund Pike (I must say, she's so underrated and one of my favorite actresses after seeing her in Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Wives and Daughters), played the beautiful Maggie Greer, the distant wife of Bruce Willis' character, agent Tom Greer. She was so beautiful and flawless in this film especially when she plays her surrogate robotic self (interesting though 'cause that's what Rosamund really looks like in real-life, except for the robotic acting, lol). Like Bruce, I thought Rosamund was great playing dual roles here. She really nailed both roles: the real fragile and vulnerable Maggie (they made her look older and a mess here) and her perfect looking surrogate version. Rosamund was perfect in playing her dual role.

In Theaters Today: Surrogates

Rosamund Pike's new action/sci-fi/thriller film Surrogates, which she co-stars with Bruce Willis is now showing in U.S. theaters nationwide today (September 25th)! Go see it!

In this film, Rosamund Pike plays Bruce Willis' character's wife, Maggie Greer.

Besides Rosamund Pike and Bruce Willis, the rest of the cast include Boris Kodjoe, Ving Rhames, and Radha Mitchell. Written by Michael Ferris and John Brancato based on the novel from Top Shelf Comix' Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. Not too mention, this film was executive produced by actress Elizabeth Banks (The Uninvited, W, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Definitely, Maybe to name a few of her well-known movies) with her husband Max Handelman. Also, producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman from Mandeville Films are the team behind “The Proposal,” “Traitor,” “Wild Hogs,” “Bringing Down the House” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.” Surrogates was directed by Jonathan Mastow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and U-571).

Last night (9/24), the Premiere Of Touchstone Pictures' "Surrogates" (See Arrivals photos here!) was held at at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, CA with Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast (sans Rosamund Pike). Unfortunately, no pics of RP from the premiere...looks like she was not in attendance as she was still in Montreal, Canada filming Barneys Version.

Here's a brief synopsis for
Surrogates:

Rosamund Pike in Montreal filming Barneys Version

According to The Montreal Gazette, Rosamund Pike is currently filming the upcoming independent film, Barney's Version in Montreal, Canada this week, while her current big budget film Surrogates with Bruce Willis opens nationwide in U.S. theaters tomorrow! She plays the character Miriam Greenberg, Barney’s third and final wife, and the love of his life.

Barney’s Version is directed by Richard Lewis who co-wrote and directed Whale Music, and spent the past nine years as an executive producer, writer and director on the hit crime series CSI. The screenplay is by Michael Konyves and the flick is produced by former Montrealer Robert Lantos, whose previous credits include Eastern Promises, Being Julia and Black Robe. The co-producers are Montreal’s Lyse Lafontaine, Italian producer Domenico Procacci and Lantos’s son Ari Lantos.

The production will move to New York City for a week of shooting after production wraps here and, along the way, there will also be some filming in the countryside near Montreal. A spokesman for the production wouldn’t say where exactly filming would take place in the country but it’s a good bet it’ll be somewhere near Lake Memphremagog in the Eastern Township given that a good chunk of the novel takes place in that stunningly-beautiful part of the world.

Also, while we're still on the Barney's Version subject...

In addition, here are a couple important details from the movie where Rosamund was mentioned in an interesting article by Canada.com...

From page to screen: Mordecai Richler's Barney's Version brings book's magic to life

On this day, they were shooting the scene in which Miriam, played by British actress Rosamund Pike, breaks the news to her now ex-husband that she doesn't want to ever see him again.

Wife 3: Miriam (Rosamund Pike)

British actress Rosamund Pike - who played a baddie in the James Bond picture Die Another Day and Keira Knightley's older sister in Pride and Prejudice - began work on Barney's Version only last week and the shoot got off in intense fashion. On her first day, she filmed the scene in which Barney meets her for the first time (at his second wedding). The next day they shot, in the Ritz garden, the poignant moment when she breaks the news to Barney that they can no longer even be friends.

"The book is about versions of the truth and he finally finds his truth with Miriam,'' said Pike. "She's the person who represents truth and straightforwardness because life for her is black-and-white. She's very moral and, finally, Barney lets her down.''

New An Education Clips

There are some new clips for An Education (in U.S. theaters October 9th), starring Carey Mulligan and Rosamund Pike.

Set in 1960s London, An Education finds Jenny (Mulligan), a teenage girl just waiting to break free from her boring school life and conservative parents. That escape comes from a disarming older gentleman David (Peter Sarsgaard) who takes her out onto the city's club scene and introduces her to his good friend and business partner Danny (Dominic Cooper) and his unintentionally funny girlfriend Helen (Rosamund Pike).

Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan are two of Hollywood's Hottest Young Stars under 25

Pride & Prejudice stars Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan made the Moviefone’s annual Top 25 Under 25 list this year! Keira made the list 3 times now and Carey for the first time.

Check out and read what Moviefone.com had to say about about them below!

The 25 Hottest Actors Under 25

Keira Knightley

Age: 24

Years on the List: 2007, 2008, 2009

What She’s Done: She played the sexiest swashbuckler ever in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ franchise, scored an Oscar nod for 2005’s ‘Pride & Prejudiceand bathed with Sienna Miller (platonically, of course) in this year’s ‘The Edge of Love.’

What’s Next: Though she won’t be returning for ‘Pirates 4,’ she has a quartet of films due in 2010 — including ‘London Boulevard‘ (opposite Colin Farrell), and ‘Never Let Me Go,’ based on Kazu Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel.

Industry Buzz: “I met her the night she wore Vera Wang and didn’t win a Golden Globe, and as modest as she was, I could tell that I was talking to a girl that knew she’d win a Globe — or even an Oscar — one day soon.” — Lien Ta, Hollywood.com

Carey Mulligan

Age: 24

Years on List: 2009

What She's Done: Writing a letter to the producers won her the role of Kitty Bennett in the 2005 Keira Knightley starrer 'Pride & Prejudice,' and she appeared briefly in summer's 'Public Enemies.'

What's Next: She's getting immaculate grades for her role in the coming-of-age Sundance darling 'An Education,' with some pundits even whispering Oscar. She'll also be seen in December's 'Brothers' and next year stars in 'Wall Street 2' with Shia LaBeouf, whom she's rumored to now be dating.

Industry Buzz: "She's a British Katie Holmes in terms of her charming girl-next-door looks, but she also comes equipped with serious acting chops that have so far awarded her roles in big films ... Still quietly floating under the radar, look for Mulligan to become a household name come 2010 when 'An Education' (hopefully) nabs her an Oscar nod." -- Erik Davis, Cinematical.com
